Dave Bautista Steps Up His Defense Of James Gunn With Passionate New Tweet

The most surprising news to come during San Diego Comic-Con wasn't a new trailer or a surprising casting announcement, it was Disney's decision to fire James Gunn following the unearthing of some old tweets the director had made which made jokes that many might not find funny. Dave Bautista had promised he would have more to say following his first statements on the topic and he now has, believing people should focus more on the good work James Gunn has done recently rather than the terrible jokes he made in the past.

Dave Bautista came to James Gunn's defense immediately after the decision to remove him from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was made and so one certainly wouldn't expect anything less than a full-throated defense to come now. Bautista's passion is palpable here. Bautista takes aim not only at those responsible for bringing the tweets to light but also anybody who is not standing by James Gunn. Bautista clearly feels that Gunn should be judged based on the work he has done recently, which he calls inspiring, rather than his behavior from years ago.

While many people are clearly going to have many different reactions to this situation, it's understandable where Dave Bautista's fire comes from here. While James Gunn's Marvel movies may have been two of the more lighthearted entries in many ways, they don't shy away from dealing with serious topics. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 especially dealt with important topics like parenthood, abuse, and toxic masculinity. It was a movie that struck a chord with many. Certainly, Bautista himself seems inspired enough to come to James Gunn's defense.

Of course, with Dave Bautista feeling so passionately about this situation, it makes one wonder how it might affect the future of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. One fan asked Big Dave if he might sit out the new film as a form of protest. Bautista doesn't answer that question with a specific answer, saying that there are bigger issues here.

While some of Dave Bautista's co-stars have stopped short of making clear statements on their feelings on this topic, expect to hear the man behind Drax continue to be very vocal about his feelings here. We certainly haven't heard the end of this story.

Justice Leagues Reshoots Reportedly Changed Cyborgs Story In A Major Way

For decades Victor Stone, a.k.a. Cyborg, was best known in the DC Comics mythology as a member of the Teen Titans, but when the New 52 launched in 2011, Cyborg's backstory was reimagined so that he was instead one of the founding Justice Leaguers. He filled that same role in Justice League last year, and along with fully introducing Ray Fisher's Cyborg following his cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the movie also brought back Victor's father, Dr. Silas Stone. Silas survived his encounter with Steppenwolf in Justice League, but apparently before the movie went through reshoots, the plan was for Silas to be killed.

This information comes from Vulture editor Kyle Buchanan, who stated that in an earlier cut of Justice League, Silas Stone was killed halfway through, presumably after he and the S.T.A.R. Labs personnel are kidnapped by Steppenwolf and his Parademon flunkies. At the end of Justice League, Cyborg finds a video of Silas, and his words are used to play over the final montage. But once the Justice League reshoots, which were overseen by Joss Whedon, went into effect, Silas was kept alive and his video message was taken out, with Amy Adams' Lois Lane delivering Justice League's final lines instead (excluding the post-credits scene).

It's no secret to anyone who paid close attention to Justice League's development that there were quite a few shakeups behind the scenes, particularly after director Zack Snyder departed and Joss Whedon, who had already been brought aboard for script rewrites, was tasked with seeing the movie to completion. This led to various story changes, though Silas Stone being kept alive is certainly one of the tamer alterations. Just like in the comics, Silas rebuilt Victor's damaged body after a car crash nearly killed him, only in the DCEU, Victor's robotic body was assembled by one of the three Mother Boxes left on Earth. When Steppenwolf arrived on Earth, Silas and other S.T.A.R. Labs scientists were taken because they'd been in contact with the Mother Box, but Cyborg, Batman, Wonder Woman and Flash managed to get Silas and the other survivors away. By the end of Justice League, Silas and Victor seemed be on better terms, and Silas was shown helping Victor further explore his cybernetic abilities, which included redesigning his body.

Although a Cyborg movie was one of the first DCEU movies to be announced, a lot has changed with the franchise in the years since then, and now it's incredible unlikely that Cyborg will arrive in 2020 as previously announced. If/when Cyborg does get off the ground, Joe Morton is expected to reprise Silas Stone, and the actor has said that the solo movie will focus on the Stone family, the specific circumstances that led to Victor becoming Cyborg and Victor's life as a superhero who can't hide his true nature from the public. Considering that Victor has already lost his mother, it's probably for the best Justice League didn't go through with taking Silas off the table. Now Cyborg can take the next step on his heroic journey with his dad supporting him.

Will Smith may be a desperado, but he isnt desperate for roles. In fact, when he was presented with the idea of playing the Genie in Guy Ritchies Aladdin, out this weekend, the actors first impulse was to say no.

Why would an a-lister say no to a role in a big Disney live action adaptation? Well, Robin Williams original performance in 1992s Aladdin was one of the most iconic of all-time, and Will Smith didnt originally think he could bring anything new to the table. He told Ellen DeGeneres this week:

I was like, Naw, man. No, Robin Williams like smashed that thing. You have to be careful stepping into projects like that. At first I looked at it he revolutionized what you could do in these kinds of movies. I was listening and listening. I didnt think I wanted to touch it. Then, I started playing with the music and the music was where I found my in to the genie.

While Will Smith initially felt he would have to pass on Aladdin, he did tinker around with the idea for a bit. He revealed on Ellen that when he went into the studio and spent some time toying around with the iconic song Friend like Me he realized he could be the right fit for the big, blue genie.

Per the actor, the real flash of inspiration was when Will Smith realized he could bring in his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air character's characteristics and bring some hip-hop flavor to the role. He also said:

Friend like Me was the first song that I messed with in the studio and then I found that sort of hip-hop flavor. What Robin did was took his stand up and used his standup persona. I was like, Oh, I could just use my Fresh Prince persona because the Genie has been forward and back in time. You can pull references from anywhere. I mirrored that, and the hip hop in was where I saw I could put my own signature while maintaining the nostalgic value.

Nostalgia is a big thing in Disneys 2019 live-action Aladdin. Without giving too much away, the movie mirrors a lot of the iconic classics most memorable moments. However, it also spins the tale in a new way, with characters like Jasmine gaining agency and characters like the Genie adding a different flavor into the mix. In fact, 'Friend Like Me' has been a big entry point for Will Smith to engage with fans of the franchise as well.

Reviews are out for Aladdin now, and while not everyone loved the movie, reviews for the upcoming live action flick have generally been positive, and Will Smith has been well-liked, despite initial backlash against his version of the genie.

Whoever took on the role of the genie was always going to have to deal with being compared to Robin Williams, who would be a tough act for anyone to follow. Honestly, the role really needed to go to someone splashy with a big name in order to work, and we're lucky Will Smith said yes after much deliberation. If the Guy Ritchie flick had cast a no-name, I'm not sure that person would have been able to pull it off.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Aquaman Ticket

Having first cameoed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and later making his full DC Extended Universe debut in Justice League, Jason Momoa's Aquaman is back on the big screen this week for, you guessed it, Aquaman. Director James Wan took the reins of Arthur Curry's first cinematic, standalone adventure, and in addition to further proving how formidable and badass the hero is, Aquaman is also giving us our first comprehensive look at Atlantis and the other underwater societies of the DCEU's Earth. But one thing Aquaman does have with other DCEU movies is that it's being displayed in 3D.

If you're curious about Aquaman's quality as a movie overall, I'd recommend you read CinemaBlend's review. Here, we're just going over how effectively the sixth DCEU installment makes use of its 3D technology. Needless to say that this is a stacked theatrical week, as fellow new releases like Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns, as well as movies that have already been out for a bit like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, are all competing for your attention. So if you are planning to see Aquaman, is it worth shelling out a few extra dollars for the 3D experience? Read ahead before making your final decision!

We've come to expect 3D presentations for nearly all superhero movies, but Aquaman is definitely among the most deserving. From action-packed moments like Arthur and his half-brother Orm engaged in gladiatorial combat over a lava pit or Black Manta and his goons attacking Arthur and Mera in Sicily, there are a lot of eye-catching moments in Aquaman. Obviously you can still enjoy Aquaman's visuals on a standard 2D screen, but the movie is quite worthy of the 3D format, especially when it comes to being more immersed in Atlantis and the other underwater kingdoms.

With a movie so deserving of being displayed in 3D, you'd hope that the filmmakers would spend a lot of time ensuring that the 3D elements were incorporated seamlessly, and thankfully, Aquaman delivered on that front. As opposed to feeling tacked on and unnatural, the 3D-formatted shots feel organic, as if you're sitting right next to the main players as the action unfolds. Even when Aquaman calms down and becomes more introspective, the characters never appear like they're artificial. There are a scattering of instances where the 3D elements just weren't noticeable, but these in no way detract from the overall experience.

When one thinks of a 3D movie, the first thought that usually comes to mind is objects on the screen "jumping out" at you, and Aquaman handles this aspect excellently. The movie has a unique space to play around with things like depth perception, and whether we're watching events on land or underwater, it's definitely noticeable rather than happening too fast or subtle to make any noticeable impact. The depth perception element is handled particularly well during slow motion sequences, like when Orm is dodging Arthur's trident during their first fight or when water droplets are frozen in midair.

Seeing objects appear to jump out from the screen is cool, but a lot of work also needs to be poured into the environments, i.e. the background. In Aquaman's case, because Atlantis and the other strange underwater locales were constructed from scratch, that allowed more freedom with controlling the focus of the visuals, and as a result, these alien-like environments feel immense in 3D. As far as the land scenes go, the depth shines best when Arthur and Mera are traversing the Sahara. That said, there are some scenes in Aquaman where there is so much busyness that it leads to some background blurriness, so that knocks down this category's score down a bit.

When you're wearing 3D glasses, there's going to be some diminishing brightness. Fortunately, Aquaman is the DCEU's brightest film yet, and I'm not talking about tone. The dazzling colors and lights of the movie can be appreciated in a normal screening, but you can tell that those involved in the 3D process put in the time and effort to make sure that they could still pop out even with some obscuration. Lack of brightness is rarely an issue, even, ironically, in darker scenes. For example, when Arthur, Mera and Thomas Curry are caught in that tidal wave hitting the coast, it's still easy to make out what's happening.

You can tell how much 3D a movie is using by repeatedly removing your glasses during the feature presentation and seeing how much blur there is. More blurriness means there's been a lot of image manipulation, and Aquaman has that consistently throughout the movie. Even in scenes when you wouldn't expect any 3D to be infused, like when Thomas Curry and Atlanna are talking to each other for the first time in Thomas' humble abode, there's still a slight blurry effect. Granted, you won't want to watch Aquaman this way for too long, but it just goes to show that those handling the 3D were quite thorough.

Everyone reacts differently to a 3D movies, and some people are more prone to feeling queasy or generally uneasy. While Aquaman does a good job for the most part of ensuring that its action sequences aren't too disorienting in 3D form, there were a few times when I had to take off the glasses or look away for a second or two because my eyes felt too strained. I doubt that Aquaman will cause anyone to get straight up sick, but it is possible that some of you might feel some discomfort.

If you intend on seeing Aquaman in theaters, it's definitely worth paying a little extra for the 3D experience. You can tell that a lot of work went into ensuring that the 3D conversion on the DC movie looked as natural as possible. Yes, there are a few minor issues, and Aquaman can still be appreciated in the standard 2D format, but in 3D, the underwater realms become more stunning and the action-packed sequences become more thrilling. I'd even recommend setting down even more money to checking out Aquaman in IMAX 3D, making it the ultimate visual treat.
