James Wan Had An Important Request Of Justice Leagues Producers While Working On Aquaman

Unlike most debut solo movies, James Wan's upcoming Aquaman movie doesn't feature the big screen debut of Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry. As fans know, the character actually first appeared three years ago, briefly cameoing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and then he came back for a supporting role in 2017's Justice League. This by itself put the single-hero adventure on a strange footing, but there is one thing that the production did demand, and that was being able to reveal the DC Extended Universe's vision of Atlantis. Producer Peter Safran told us,

Going into Justice League, before they shot it, there were a lot of conversations about the things that were important for James [Wan] to be the one to reveal - storylines that were important to him, elements that were important to him. We wanted to make sure that Atlantis was never seen before we show it. And so, there were those conversations with Zack [Snyder] and DC and both DC and Zack and the studio were all incredibly magnanimous about respecting those things that were important to James.

Last July -- months before the release of Justice League - I had the incredible opportunity to hop on a plane and join a small group of other film journalists on a trip to the Melbourne, Australia set of Aquaman, and through interviews and observation learned a great deal about the movie. During a roundtable interview with Peter Safran, the filmmaker was asked about coordinating the story with the rest of the DC Extended Universe, and it was revealed that the undersea world of Atlantis was specifically held out of the franchise's big team-up blockbuster and reserved for the aquatic hero's solo project.

Of course, as fans know, this didn't stop Justice League from having at least some underwater action. After all, there is a sequence where Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) battles for the Motherbox held by the Atlanteans, and winds up beating Aquaman in a fight. That being said, it's not exactly like the movie explores the world at all, and the only other significant character to be introduced was Amber Heard's Mera.

The discussion about Atlantis and its introduction in the DC Extended Universe was clearly a big one behind the scenes of Justice League and Aquaman, but it was far from the only one held. After all, the concept behind cinematic universes is maintained continuity, and that requires a lot of communication. Fortunately, Peter Safran seemed to fully recognize that during our interview, saying,

Throughout the whole process we've always made sure the storyline that we're telling and the storyline that they told meld together in an organic fashion. There were conversations as recently as the additional shooting [on Justice League], just about, 'We want to do this, well, what about this, how does it impact us?' and everybody's played very well together.

More Lisbeth Salander Movies For Claire Foy? Heres What She Tells Us

Before this week, audiences have associated the leather-clad Lisbeth Salander with two actresses: Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara. The former brought Lisbeth to life in three Swedish adaptations of Stieg Larsson's Millennium novels, while the latter played Lisbeth once, for David Fincher. This week, The Queen's Claire Foy gets her turn in a new film The Girl In The Spider's Web, and it's being set up as the launch of a franchise. So when CinemaBlend interviewed Foy, we asked if Lisbeth is a character she wants to return to, and she replied:

I mean, she's... I find her infinitely interesting, and there's so much in there that I will never get to the bottom of. But at the moment, this film is the main focus, and for people to watch it is exciting.

I bet if you went back in time and found interview clips of Rooney Mara as she and Daniel Craig were supporting their take on The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo, the actress would have had similar responses of wanting to return to the role of Lisbeth Salander, but needed people to come and support this film, first.

And Claire Foy is correct not to put the cart before the horse when it comes to her interpretation of Lisbeth Salander. Before she is given the chance to explore the angel of vengeance any further, audiences need to show that they like what she and Fede Alvarez have cooked up in The Girl in the Spider's Web.

But we asked Claire Foy this question because we believe that mainstream audiences are going to connect with the action-driven version of Lisbeth that is front and center in Fede Alvarez's movie. And we also think that the insight into Lisbeth Salander's character and history that are used to further the plot of Spider's Web will intrigue crowds in ways the previous Girl movies did not.

Even better, should The Girl in the Spider's Web catch on, there's a fifth book waiting for Claire Foy and Fede Alvarez to adapt. Published in 2017, The Girl Who Takes An Eye For An Eye continues the story of Spider's Web, and continues to dig into Lisbeth's checkered past. So, more Lisbeth is possible, and continuity in the lead role would be preferred.

Black Panther Is About To Hit A Major Superhero Movie Milestone

At this point, there is a solid chance that many of you have already heard about how Ryan Coogler's Black Panther seriously overperformed at the box office. T'Challa's (Chadwick Boseman) origin movie has become one of the most successful Marvel Cinematic Universe films in history, and it has officially become a watershed moment in the history of the comic book movie genre. Specifically, it looks like Black Panther is about to become the most financially successful superhero origin movie of all time.

Black Panther has knocked out milestone after milestone in the short time that it's been in theaters, but the one it's about to hit is one of its most impressive yet. The eighteenth Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is currently nearing $412 million at the domestic box office, which puts it in spitting distance of overtaking Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman's $412.5 million lifetime gross, which will make it the highest-grossing comic book origin movie of all time.

As of right now, Black Panther has most recently overtaken Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, as well as Tim Miller's Deadpool -- both of which have become recognized as record breakers and game changers in their own right. T'Challa is often regarded as the wealthiest comic book character in the Marvel and DC canons, and the box office performance of Black Panther is definitely helping him live up to that reputation.

While it's true that Black Panther technically hasn't overtaken Wonder Woman's top spot on the Box Office Mojo leaderboards just yet, it's worth remembering that it's almost certainly going to happen soon. Black Panther has been in theaters for less than two weeks, and it is already within one million dollars of the DCEU film's lifetime gross. Considering the legs that Black Panther seems to have at the box office (which is especially impressive when we reflect on the fact that Wonder Woman similarly showed quite a bit of stamina at the box office), it's really just a matter of waiting until it takes the top spot.

UPDATE: Black Panther has obviously blown past the milestone. It has passed $421,000,000 at the domestic box office and is now approaching $750,000,000 in worldwide grosses. What an incredible success story.
