Amazon Is Trying To Buy A Major Theater Chain

Amazon made its name online by becoming the go to destination for books and online shopping. The company is now the dominant name in ebooks, as well as a huge player in streaming video and music. More recently, Amazon has decided to break free from the tubes of the internet and make a splash in the physical realm with its own bookstores and its purchase of Whole Foods last year. But Amazon isn't stopping there. The Seattle-based company is now looking to add theaters to its list of offerings, as it is in the running to acquire Landmark Theaters.

According to Bloomberg, Amazon is one of several potential buyers for the company owned by Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner. Landmark Theater's owners have apparently been looking into a possible sale, and Amazon is one of the names in the running to buy the theater chain. As of right now, there are talks, but nothing is final. But should things become final and a lot of hurdles be jumped, Amazon would continue its push into the brick-and-mortar space with its very own theater chain that currently is comprised of 50 theaters in 27 markets and is known mostly for showing indie flicks and foreign films.

Amazon is already a huge content distributor and producer, so this would give the company another distribution channel, but one in the physical space with locations in major markets around the country. Amazon now has its own film studio, and with its own distribution network of theaters, Amazon Studios could get its original movies in theaters, getting them greater visibility and qualifying them for awards consideration, without needing to pay distribution fees to other exhibitors.

However, there is a rub to Amazon, which owns a movie and television studio, being able to also own a chain of theaters. During the Golden Age of Hollywood, the industry operated under the studio system, wherein primarily five major studios had a monopoly over distribution and controlled exhibition of their films. Under this model of vertical integration, theater chains might only show films made by the movie studio that owned them. So you would go to a Paramount theater for a Paramount film, for example. This model was struck down in the landmark 1948 Supreme Court Case U.S. v. Paramount Pictures. That decision, known as the Paramount Decree, led to the production, distribution and exhibition model we have today.

That brings us back to Amazon. As the owner of a movie studio, Amazon would theoretically be barred from owning its own theater chain. However, the Justice Department recently said that the decree, which turned 70 this year, may no longer be applicable or effective, and may be terminated. So it is possible that if Amazon does purchase Landmark Theaters, it could set a new paradigm.

In the past, Amazon has been more amenable than Netflix to theatrical runs prior to streaming for its original movies, but this would give the company distribution control at multiple levels. It makes sense that this would be the next logical step for the company, and Netflix seems to have had the same idea. As we have seen, Netflix and Amazon have both increased their original content offerings to reduce reliance on licensing content from other producers. In the world of streaming, you are increasingly seeing a focus on owning content and distribution, so it makes sense that the physical realm would be next.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a fascinating place of flux, given the horrifying events of Avengers: Infinity War. The Russo Brothers surprised everyone by having Josh Brolin's Thanos actually win, and wipe out half the galaxy after collecting the Infinity Stones. Fans were left with mouths agape, as their reactions echoed the surviving Avengers' dumbfounded expressions. All eyes are on if/how the situation will be resolved in the still untitled Avengers 4, with information being kept under wraps. The Russo brothers recently posted a cryptic photo from the film's set, and now it seems one detail may have a connection to Infinity War. Just check out the decoded post below.

Now this is interesting. While possible a mere coincidence, The Russo Brothers' recent Avengers 4 photo actually featured a connection to Avengers: Infinity War. Namely, the mysterious gadget seen behind Rhodey during the most recent film. Now the question is: what does it all mean?

This post from MCU Tweets is sure to inspire countless fan theories, since the mysterious device might have a connection between the two Avengers movies. Fans have been wondering how the surviving Avengers (plus Rocket and Nebula) will attempt to reverse Thanos' snap, and therefore revive the countless heroes and other victims that faded to dust when Thanos snapped his big purple finger. Perhaps the mysterious device holds the key, or at least part of the key, to restoring order to the galaxy.

Since it seems impossible for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to continue on without the likes of heroes like Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange, there are a tons of theories regarding how the good guys could somehow bring back the dusted characters in Avengers 4. With Nick Fury contacting Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, it's very possible the end game could involve her. Additionally, Ant-Man and The Wasp's mid-credits scene revealed that Paul Rudd's Ant-Man has been stranded in the Quantum Realm, with the mysterious setting having time traveling and/or universe traveling capabilities. There's a ton of possibilities, and the device seen in Avengers 4's photo is yet another one.

Unfortunately, the Russo Brothers likely aren't going to be spilling the beans anytime soon. The MCU will be focusing on the forthcoming release of Captain Marvel, and will be keeping tight lipped about the contents of Avengers 4. The Russo Brothers still haven't revealed the film's title, and reshoots are currently underway. And with things like James Gunn's firing from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise adding extra pressure and complications, there is a ton to juggle before Phase Three concludes.

Mark Hamill Reacts To Star Wars: The Last Jedi Backlash

While the movie was released back in December, cinephiles and fans alike haven't stopped dissecting and discussing Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson's subversive sequel shattered expectations for the space opera, and took the characters into new and unexpected places. But since Johnson took so many risks, there are plenty of critics who aren't fond of The Last Jedi, and have made their feelings known via social media. The newest sequel is certainly one of the most divisive installments in the Star Wars franchise, and now series protagonist Mark Hamill has spoken up about the backlash surrounding The Last Jedi. He said,

We were so lucky there wasn't social media when Empire Strikes Back came out. In those days you really had to take a lot of effort and sit down and say, 'Dear Mr. Hamill, why did you turn Harrison Ford into a coffee table? This is not right.' Now, it's wallop and send. It's so easy. Pure hatred can be delivered directly to your home in a nanosecond.

It looks like Mark Hamill has noticed how social media has changed the overall climate of filmmaking. Bad word of mouth (or word of Tweet) can kill a movie before it even has a chance. While The Last Jedi was still a critical and financial success, Hamill isn't sure how fans would have reacted to the original trilogy if social media were around to make opinions known.

Mark Hamill's comments to CNN does stand to reason, especially regarding the major twists in Empire Strikes Back. The bomb that Luke was Darth Vader's son was major, and one that definitely could have been spoiled if there was social media when the sequel arrived back in 1980. Additionally, Han's carbonite freeze was a big point of contention among OG fans, as Harrison Ford's signature character was basically the coolest part about the galaxy far, far away. Both of these twists might not have fared well on Twitter, but moviegoers had to actually speak to each other to share their ideas about the sequel (and the film largely considered the best in the franchise).

Star Wars fans are an interesting community. There are entire generations of fans, some of which have been following George Lucas' sci-fi world for decades. It's a property that means a lot to many moviegoers, which is what makes anticipation and fan expectations so sky high. While fans are delighted for each new installment to the franchise, it does seem hard to please them. J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens was criticized for being too formulaic and close to A New Hope, while Rian Johnson was attacked for taking too many risks with The Last Jedi. Is there a happy medium, or do the cast and crew just need to accept that they're not going to please everyone?
