The Meg Director Explains Why Filming Those Beach Scenes Was Super Difficult

Filming scenes on or near water is notoriously difficult. Steven Spielberg's Jaws has become famous for the technical problems that it faced during its own production, and while technology has improved in the shark genre, there were still tough issues that The Meg director Jon Turteltaub had to face as he shot on the beach. Specifically, it turns out that the extras on the film had way more fun escaping the giant shark than he wanted to convey on camera. In a recent interview, the National Treasure director explained:

The first thing you do is you hire people with bullhorns to yell in Mandarin at people so that you don't have to. But believe it or not, the hardest thing when you tell a thousand people to swim for their lives because the sharks coming, 500 of them start giggling and smiling, and editing around all those goofy faces and smiles turns out to be a lot harder than I thought.

Despite a generally offbeat tone and a fun sensibility, The Meg definitely still takes its particular brand of carnage and horror seriously. The film plays its shark-based scares with a straight face, and the moments in which the enormous shark attack humans on a remote Chinese beach are played for the horror that they embody. That was what Jon Turteltaub was going for as he shot these sequences on the beach and, as he explained in his recent interview with Syfy Wire, the extras who acted in these scenes seemed to get caught up in the fun of the whole ordeal, thus creating character breaks that he had to edit around.

Of course, these remarks open up the debate of what will happen if the folks behind The Meg decide that they want to return to the property for another installment. No sequel has been confirmed yet, but in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Jon Turtletaub also noted that a good sequel wouldn't merely introduce a bigger shark for the wise-cracking Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) to fight. With that in mind, maybe making sure the next film (if it happens at all) doesn't go near the beach would be an excellent way to keep things fresh while also preventing any of those editing issues.

The Meg is now in theaters and offering up an unexpectedly strong box office haul in the process. Head over to our full review if you want to know everything that we here at CinemaBlend think of the film, and then read our review roundup to get a better sense of opinions from all over the web. Beyond that, you can also head over to our comprehensive movie premiere guide to stay in-the-loop on all of the significant release dates on the horizon in 2018!

Billy Dee Williams Is Getting Star Wars Fit With Sunglasses On

Billy Dee Williams Is Getting Star Wars Fit With Sunglasses On

Star Wars fans are excited that Billy Dee Williams is coming back to the Star Wars franchise, as he's getting ready for that return in the most Billy Dee way possible. The actor recently released a short clip of himself getting into the physical shape to play Lando Calrissian again, and it turns out that Billy Dee Williams so cool that he even works out in shades. Check it out.

Billy Dee Williams says in the post on Twitter that he's feeling better than ever and he's certainly looking good throwing punch after punch at Gunnar Peterson, the personal trainer to the stars that is getting Billy Dee screen ready. While the actor may not look ready to star in the next Rocky movie, he still looks pretty damn good for an 81-year-old actor. He's the last guy in his 80s I'd want to mess with.

Of course, Billy Dee Williams built a reputation over the years of being one cool guy, so of course, he wouldn't bother taking off his sunglasses to workout. That wouldn't be cool enough. Although I can't decide if I like that, or the fact that his workout clothes have his initials, better.

Billy Dee Williams has been working with a personal trainer for some time. In fact, it was his admission that he was doing so that first got the rumor mill going about the possibility of a return to Star Wars. The fact that Williams was working out in the months prior to production starting on Star Wars Episode IX had many wondering if the timing wasn't a coincidence. As it turned out, it wasn't. After being apparently confirmed in the trades, Lucasfilm revealed that Billy Dee Williams would, in fact, be returning to play Lando Calrissian in Star Wars Episode IX. Of course, that doesn't mean we have the first clue how Lando will reenter the story, or where he's been for the last two movies.

It's going to be great to see Lando again, if only because the current Star Wars universe is now somewhat devoid of our favorite characters. While we know that Mark Hamill will be returning, one doesn't expect that a character who is likely now a Force Ghost will have a major role. We also know that Carrie Fisher will be back in Episode IX via the use of deleted scenes from the previous two movies. Though, that too will likely limit how big a part Leia will have. At this point, the only original trilogy mainstay who will likely be really involved in the story is Chewbacca, so bringing Lando back in will be nice for the old school fans. Star Wars Episode IX is now in production and will hit theaters in December 2019.

Glover said Billy Dee Williams shared simple but perfect advice for how to play Lando. It's such a shame that Lando will be returning to Star Wars after Han Solo's death in Star Wars: The Force Awakens , and Carrie Fisher's real-life death in 2016.

Shirtless Jeff Goldblum From Jurassic Park Has A Giant Statue In London

Shirtless Jeff Goldblum From Jurassic Park Has A Giant Statue In London

There may be no more iconic image from the entire Jurassic Park franchise than shirtless Jeff Goldblum. The shot of an open-shirted Dr. Ian Malcolm from the original Jurassic Park has been everything from a meme to a Funko Pop toy, and now, in celebration of the film's 25th anniversary, the moment is now a statue sitting in front of the Tower Bridge in London. Check it out.

The statue is the creation of UK streaming service Now TV who apparently decided the best way to celebrate the birthday of Jurassic Park was with a nearly 25-foot long statue commemorating it's most famous moment. No, not a lawyer being eaten off a toilet by a Tyrannosaurus Rex, but an injured Jeff Goldblum with no shirt. According to Cnet, The statue comes in at about 23-feet long and about 10-feet high and weighs 330 pounds.

The statue is an impressive feat and it's utterly hilarious that somebody actually commissioned a statue of this size to celebrate a moment like this. Although, it should be said the statue's face leaves a little something to be desired. It doesn't really look like Jeff Goldblum. Perhaps if the actor wasn't feeling well.

The scene takes place following the aforementioned T.Rex attack. Jeff Goldblum's Dr. Ian Malcolm was successfully able to rescue the children from the dinosaur, though, not without sustaining an injury to his leg. After the characters have successfully made it back to the main Jurassic Park control room, Malcolm is having his injury tended to, which makes sense, though, his shirt has been completely unbuttoned, which makes less sense. Certainly, performing basic first aid to a leg injury doesn't require one to take off a shirt. He doesn't take off his pants, which would make somewhat more sense.

Of course, when you look at the picture, you understand why the decision was made. Now TV posted a fantastic video to Twitter which basically shows what we're all thinking.

These feel like pretty extreme lengths to go to point out that you can now stream Jurassic Park on the UK service, but hey, to each their own.

Jeff Goldblum has spoken at length about the now famous scene and he claims he doesn't actually remember whether showing off the chest was a Steven Spielberg idea or a Jeff Goldblum idea. Either way, it's unlikely anybody knew just what they were creating when they made the decision.

Those who want to relive the moment, (again and again if that's your thing) can apparently watch it on Now TV in the UK. Jurassic Park is also currently streaming on Netflix in the US.

Following Star Trek Beyond, Star Trek 4 is seemingly in limbo. This uncertainty has been going on for a while now, and according to Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy actor Karl Urban, there is still no movement that he is aware of, as he explained. One of the biggest questions you could ask about the plot of the movie is: Why didn't Thanos just kill all of the Avengers as soon as he had the means? Certainly, he disposed of Loki quickly enough, why not do that for anyone that opposes him. The answer is simply that it wasn't a priority for him.
