Halloween Writer Danny McBride Was Too Freaked Out To Meet Michael Myers

With the summer months in the rear view, the time has come to look forward to fall movies. This includes projects specifically for the season, like Blumhouse's upcoming Halloween. The canon-defying sequel will see the return of OG scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis, who is returning to play a hardened and battle ready Laurie Strode. Although John Carpenter returned to write the new movie's music, Halloween is being handled by a new team of superfans, including David Gordon Green and Danny McBride. The latter is serving as a writer, joining his favorite franchise of all time. But despite loving the original Halloween so much, he was too freaked to come face to face with villain Michael Myers. As he tells it,

That day, they were testing the mask [with] James for the very first time. They weren't even shooting with him. They had brought the mask onto set and were doing lighting tests inside the house. We creeped in early to see that... and there he was at the end of the hallway, just sort of lit from a little bit of light coming in from a bedroom shining on the Shape standing at the end of this hallway, just looking at us. We were all like, 'That's incredible! I don't want to go back there. I know what happens when you go back there!'

Smart man. Michael Myers has a habit of isolating and murdering his victims, so Danny McBride knew better than to get alone with The Shape. If only Laurie Strode's friends had the same idea back in the original movie.

Danny McBride's comments to EW continues to highlight what a superfan the Vice Principals actor is to the Halloween franchise. In many ways, John Carpenter's 1978 movie helped to shape the slasher genre, and inspired countless horror movies in the decades since. Halloween's music, characters, and cinematography have all remained iconic, including the horrifying ways in which Michael Myers stalks his victims.

As Halloween was filming, Danny McBride and the rest of the team continued highlighting how much they were trying to emulate the original. The franchise's complicated canon was quickly scrapped, making Blumhouse's new movie a direct sequel to John Carpenter's classic. The upcoming movie will reportedly rely heavily on tension, rather than gore. The first footage certainly proves this, portraying Michael Myers as an agent of chaos, who both kills and spares residents of Haddonfield at random. But there's one victim he's got his damaged eye on: Laurie Strode.

The anticipation for Halloween has only grown since the project was first announced, and the early reception for the movie has been very high. Halloween Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The New Michael Myers Movie

The Halloween franchise is one that seems to be as immortal as the primary antagonist of the series. However, rather than making just another sequel, the new Halloween takes the novel approach of ignoring every film that's been made except for the 1978 original. How well does this strategy work? Well, we here at CinemaBlend think it works pretty well. Our official review was written by Eric Eisenberg and he thinks it works very well. Eric gave the movie 4.5 stars and says...

With the exception of the Michael Myers-less Season Of The Witch (which I will staunchly defend), the legacy of the Halloween franchise has not been a strong one. And yet, in one fell swoop David Gordon Green has managed to both clean the slate and redeem the brand. It's a frightening and fun homage to the original that also breathes on its own - wonderfully subverting expectations and tropes on its path. It further intensifies the on-going horror boom, and is nothing short of a marvel.

Those are some pretty strong words of praise, but Eric's not the only one that feels that way. The main thing the new Halloween needed to be was something more than "just another sequel" and it seems that it largely succeeded. CinemaBlend Managing Director Sean O'Connell has pretty similar feelings about Halloween, saying that the movie is as likely to make new fans as it is to satisfy the old ones.

What Halloween pulls off isn't quite impossible, but it's very difficult. It revives a classic horror series -- one that has been beaten and exhausted by its own sequels -- and makes it feel fresh, relevant, original and vital. It continues, and satisfyingly closes, Laurie's journey. But it also serves as a thrilling slasher throwback in its own right. Halloween plays to die-hard fans, but also remembers it needs to create new ones. It is terrifying and funny, tense and shocking. It's the Halloween sequel loyal fans have been waiting for.

Needless to say, the new Halloween had a lot of responsibility. There were surely many different people who wanted many different things from it. While the film might not acknowledge any of the previous sequels, there are fans of the films that still want this movie to feel distinctly like a Halloween movie. There are also younger fans of horror that may not be as familiar with the original film, but have expectations for what a modern horror movie should be. The good news, at least according to CB's Braden Roberts is that the film delivers all of it.

Halloween manages to walk the line between nostalgia and fresh scares. There's something for everyone, from truly disturbing horror to dark comedy. Halloween is a compliment to original and is a great addition to the recent uptick in quality horror films.

While there really isn't a dissenting voice at CinemaBlend, project manager Cody Beck at least doesn't speak of Halloween in quite as glowing terms. While he admits it's the best Halloween sequel to date, that may be somewhat faint praise. While the film eventually finds its groove, Cody felt it took its sweet time getting there...

Halloween opens with a not-quite-convincing-enough scene of terror and continues to roll slowly for the first 30 min- even through some pretty brutal stuff. It definitely isn't shy about what it is, with numerous callbacks to the original as well as a quick jab at the sequels. A little bit of humor throughout, a few nice twists and some very violent kills, it's easily the best follow-up to John Carpenter's original.

It seems quite clear that Halloween will do well appealing to fans of the franchise, but just how well does it do with people who aren't necessarily all-in for Michael Myers? There are a couple of us who weren't necessarily looking for a new Halloween movie, but are still glad we found one. CinemaBlend Sr. Movie Contributor Mike Reyes admits that the Halloween franchise doesn't mean the same thing to him that it does to many moviegoers, but he was absolutely a fan of this movie.

As someone who didn't grow up idolizing John Carpenter's original, 2018's sequel to Halloween made me see just why the series, in its best form, has had such a lasting impact. David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, and Jeff Fradley have created a tense roller coaster of a film that not only stands out as a horror hit, but also qualifies as an exemplary family drama/thriller in the process. Let's hope the franchise stays on this path and never let's down its bad ass trio of female leads or its audience.

I'm very much in this same boat. Horror really isn't my genre if I'm being honest. Jump scares will get me literally every single time and I end up spilling my popcorn and getting annoyed. Also, I find the original Halloween to be a bit too slow in its build and most of the characters to be less than interesting, and thus their deaths less than tragic. Having said all that, I enjoyed the new Halloween more than I expected to. While it clearly pays homage to the original, it's not married to do doing things the way that movie did, which helps a great deal.

If you're a serious horror or Michael Myers fan I'm not the guy to tell you if Halloween is worth your time, but I enjoyed it well enough. It's not as streamlined as the original and it doesn't take itself 100% seriously, (like 80-85% seriously) but to me, that's a benefit.

Overall, it seems clear that if you're looking for a horror movie to watch this Halloween season, you could hardly do better than the new Halloween. It works if you're a big fan of the original, it works if you're not. It may or may not go down in history as the best Halloween sequel or a particularly great horror movie, but you could certainly do worse. It's in theaters now.

In Defense Of Will Smiths Big Blue Genie In Aladdin

Theres been a lot written about Disneys live action Aladdin adaptation, much of it related to Will Smiths portrayal of the blue genie. Although many fans havent caught the big, all-powerful character in action yet, early looks at the sorcerer in the trailer didnt have a lot of people pumped. In fact, a healthy percentage of those on social media openly expressed concern or frustration.

During the first look at Aladdin, fans were not impressed by how ridiculously blue the big guy looked. The criticism online got so bad that Disney even felt the need to address it, noting at the time:

We have one of the most anticipated films of the year and are confident that audiences will fall in love with the Genie and all of the characters when it hits the big screen this May.

At Cinema-Con, more people heard from the Genie, who sang, danced and went for it with a hip-hop influenced version of Friend Like Me, which Will Smith has also performed on the press circuit ahead of the release of Aladdin. Some of the people around me were openly snickering and talking about how bad they thought it was.

The thing is, Will Smiths version of Aladdins Genie is spectacular.

It would be hard to top Robin Williams in the role, but Will Smith doesnt even try. Instead he brings his own energy and presence (although he keeps the hairdo). No doubt fans will recognize some similarities to Williams original version, particularly in lines like itty bitty living space, but for the most part, this is a nice, new creation, brought to life on the back of Will Smiths lovable and unique energy. The result is one of the biggest reasons why Aladdin is a fun and breezy movie that does bring feelings of nostalgia, but also has a fresh new coat of paint.

The Genie is, by definition, a showy character. Hes loud, fast-paced and frantic. Given that and the fact that fans really liked the Genie in the original animated Aladdin, theres no way there wouldnt be some clear overlap between the new and original versions. The much-discussed rendition of Friend Like Me illustrates that and out of context, created a stir among those angry fans.

In context, however, it becomes very clear what a great job Will Smith did here. There are enough similarities that fans will recognize and appreciate the Genie, but there are enough clear differences here to feel original and unique. Thats not an easy line to walk. Only someone with the charisma and the grandiosity of Will Smith could pull off the showy, over the top parts of the Genie without feeling like a less impressive karaoke version of Robin Williams and yet still have the acting confidence to play some of his scenes with a much quieter and serious energy. He goes big without feeling like a copy and yet pulls back enough to have some real heart.

Recently, Will Smith revealed that he based his version of the Genie on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air character who helped to kickstart his career back in the nineties. You can see that, but to me, that may be a bit too simplistic. Smith deserves more credit than that. You wont see this and think, Oh, thats just a blue Fresh Prince. Only after hearing the comparison will you think, Oh, that makes sense.

Guy Ritchie and Will Smith definitely put a lot of effort into making the movie feel different. Lets talk more specifically about some of those differences with minor spoilers. So, if you havent seen the movie yet and dont want to know anything, then go ahead and bail now.

Will Smiths live action genie strives to be human, but also to find meaning in family. He actually has a love interest just like Prince Ali of Ababwa in the film, played by Nasim Pedrad. The two bounce off one another comedically onscreen, leading to some of the films funniest moments. The dynamic between the two also helps us to see a different side of the Genies personality that doesnt typically have a chance to come out.

The basic formatting of the story helps with differentiation too. Guy Ritchie took a long-touted and recently confirmed fan theory and totally rolled with it in this new version, making the Genie the man telling the story of Aladdin, Jasmine, a magic lamp and Agrabah. This choice gives him more agency and allows us to interact with him outside of the narrative framework of the basic story were all familiar with.

Those choices, plus a few more I wont spoil here, all serve to give us a Genie that is familiar and identifiable but also new, different and exciting, which is, I think what we all wanted. It would have been stupid to create a live action Aladdin that was a shot-for-shot remake of the original, filled with the same characters weve all around seen. That being said, it would have also been stupid to create a movie filled with characters so different from the original there was no point in even calling it Aladdin.

Sure, hes big and hes blue. Sure, the character Will Smith is playing is a little ridiculous and cant ever possibly eclipse Robin Williams beloved original. But he gives a really good performance here, filled with charm and enough originality to keep fans entertained. Its a performance that takes the zaniness of playing an all-powerful-but-blue being and strikes the balance between going big and pulling back.

Will Smith doesnt deserve all the criticism hes gotten over the past few months. Hes good in Aladdin. A lot of fans are going to love the choices he made with his character, and if nothing else, this should serve as a good reminder that sometimes its really hard to judge standalone scenes or trailers without the proper context. So, go see it and decide for yourself. Dont take the grumblings on social media from people who havent even seen the movie as evidence you should stay away. I had a good time with his character and the larger movie, and I suspect a lot of others will too.
