Small Town Finally Overturns Footloose Ban On Dancing

Small Town Finally Overturns Footloose Ban On Dancing

In many places across the U.S. there are little-known laws, still technically in effect although rarely enforced, that range from dumb and antiquated to weird and absurd. For example, in New Hampshire it is illegal to collect or carry away seaweed at night, and in Kentucky all public officials and lawyers must take an oath stating that they have never fought in a duel with deadly weapons. In Fort Smith, Arkansas, the colloquially nicknamed Footloose ordinance has outlawed public dancing on Sundays, until now that is. The ban on dancing has finally been repealed, leaving residents free to cut loose on Sundays at last.

The Western Arkansas city of Fort Smith has had the ordinance on the books since 1953 according to KATV. The ordinance basically outlawed public dancing by barring the operation of dance halls or any public place with dancing on Sundays. The emergency clause in the ordinance stated that public dancing on Sundays "greatly endangers the public health, safety and welfare." No one has been arrested or ticketed in 20 years for violating the law, but when its continued existence was brought to the attention of City Director Andre Good, he still wanted to get rid of it and introduced the successful repeal. There is no word on whether or not citizens of Fort Smith also kicked off their Sunday shoes and held a huge dance in celebration.

Although the law was put into effect way back in 1953, it eventually earned its nickname for the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer. It is easy to see why as this law has some obvious parallels to that film. In Footloose, a local minister in the town of Bomont (John Lithgow), has gotten dancing and rock music banned completely after a family tragedy. Kevin Bacon's Ren McCormack moves to town from Chicago and challenges the anti-dancing law so that he and the other high school seniors can have a proper prom. They are successful in the end and are able to dance the night away. Footloose was also remade in a 2011 film starring Julianne Hough and Kenny Wormald and although it had 100% less Kevin Bacon, it was actually pretty well-reviewed.

Funnily enough, Footloose itself was loosely based on real-life events that took place in Elmore City, Oklahoma where dancing was outlawed until high school juniors fought to have it allowed at their prom. So there is a long history of dancing being seen as dangerous until common sense finally prevails.

Check out our release schedule for all the movies that will make you want to cut loose this year and for all the latest in movie news and why you should always read up on the local laws before dancing in the streets, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Avengers: Endgame Is Adding A Post-Credits Scene, And It's Not What You Think

Avengers: Endgame Is Adding A Post-Credits Scene, And It's Not What You Think

It goes without saying, but SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame are ahead!

If youve already seen Avengers: Endgame in theaters, you know that unlike every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie before it, it does not have a mid/post-credits scene attached. Instead, the noise of a hammer hitting iron is played, reminding audiences of when Tony Stark escaped that cave all those years ago in Iron Man. However, for its third weekend in theaters, Endgame tacking on extra footage to play after the credits, and while its not a scene in the conventional sense, it does show whats to come.

At the beginning of the week, the second Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer was released, and unlike the teaser, it was packed with Avengers: Endgame spoilers. Now Deadline is reporting that folks who see Endgame this weekend will see a pre-film message from Peter Parker himself, Tom Holland, telling moviegoers to stick around after the credits to watch the latest Far From Home trailer.

Its not often that you see a movie trailer tagged onto a movie after its finished playing. However, it does remind me how back when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 came out, a teaser scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past was shown due to a deal between director Marc Webb and 20th Century Fox. This is a more synergetic move given that Marvel Studios and Sony have partnered up for Spider-Mans MCU exploits, and it makes even more sense to tack the trailer onto Avengers: Endgame given that while that movie was the last installment of the Infinity Saga, Spider-Man: Far From Home is the last movie of Phase 3.

The latest Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer has been a tremendous success for Sony, as it collected over 135 million views in its first 24 hours online. It was also distinctive for leading with a spoiler warning from Tom Holland, which is ironic given how many sensitive plot details hes accidentally let slip over the years.

Although Marvel was originally firm on not divulging any specific and juicy details about Avengers: Endgame ahead of time in marketing, starting this week, the studio has opened the proverbial floodgates and gone all in on spoilery content, thus allowing for Spider-Man: Far From Home to address the aftermath of Endgame. Along with Peter Parker getting back into the swing of things after being gone for five years like every other person who was snapped away by Thanos, hes also mourning the loss of his mentor and father figure, Tony Stark.

However, the biggest revelation in the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer is that a hole has been torn in reality, and Jake Gyllenhaals Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio, claims to be from a different Earth. Given Mysterios penchant for illusions and trickery in the comics, we shouldnt discount the possibility that hes lying, but given how Avengers: Endgame explored different timelines, the MCU could indeed be setting the stage for a proper multiverse to be brought into the equation.

Avengers: Endgame isnt leaving theaters anytime soon, and Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 2, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more coverage about the sequel. For now, you can learn what else is coming down the MCU pipeline with our comprehensive guide.
