John Oliver Bought Weird Russell Crowe Memorabilia, Has A Plan For It Involving Blockbuster

John Oliver has made a name for himself by putting together quirky segments for HBO's Last Week Tonight. The late night host had another memorable bit this weekend, when he revealed he purchased plenty of Russell Crowe memorabilia from Cinderella Man and some of his other movie projects and wants to use the memorabilia to be a "fun, movie-themed way to draw people in" to one of the last remaining Blockbuster Video stores in Alaska. Yes, you read that correctly. And you know what? The Blockbuster store is all for it.

During the segment, John Oliver revealed that he had purchased $80,000 items from "Russell Crowe: The Art of Divorce," including a leather jockstrap that Russell Crowe wore during the making of Cinderella Man and items from Robin Hood and Les Miserables. In fact, Last Week Tonight actually paid $7,000 for the item in question all so they could make a joke on the late night TV show about movie memorabilia and Blockbuster. The rest of the segment was devoted to joking about how the show "didn't buy anything else" from the auction. (It did.)

He ended the spot directly addressing the manager at the Blockbuster at 5600 Debarr Rd. in Anchorage, Alaska -- assumedly just in case one of the other remaining Blockbusters tried to claim the prize -- and letting him know "all this shit" actually belongs to him. If you want to catch the hilarity in all of its full glory, please do so, below.

Last Week Tonight later continued to run with the joke on social media, it got some traction, and then the Blockbuster store in Alaska heard about it. In fact, the general manager at that Blockbuster, Kevin Daymude, actually told THR that the segment has already created a lot of buzz for himself and the store around the town, noting:

I had no idea whatsoever he was going to do that. We would be very honored to showcase that collection. People have been calling and coming in, wanting to know when it will all be here. If we do get it is, it could be very big for business.

Kevin Daymude's store is actually one of several stores still open in Alaska, and he also mentioned to the outlet that he doesn't actually know why the Debarr Rd. store was the one that got the shoutout on Last Week Tonight. (Probably because Debarr Rd. sounds way cooler than "College Rd." brah.) Regardless, his store may very well be the fine proprietors of some weird Russell Crowe memorabilia in the future. Because this story has several steps to go before it is likely to be finished, do stay tuned to CinemaBlend, as we will be sure to let you know if Blockbuster actually gets the movie memorabilia at some point, proof that sometimes being a part of a dwindling chain of stores does actually pay off.

Deleted Solo: A Star Wars Story Scene Shows How Han Ended Up In The Infantry

Deleted Solo: A Star Wars Story Scene Shows How Han Ended Up In The Infantry

When Han Solo joined the Imperial Navy in Solo: A Star Wars Story he planned to be a pilot. However, the next time we see him in the movie he's an infantry grunt getting blown through the air on some godforsaken planet. He mentions briefly later in the film why he got dumped from the Imperial Academy, but a newly released deleted scene reveals exactly what happened. Check it out.

The scene shows that Han Solo did, in fact, get a chance to fly with the Imperial Navy, but things don't go well. The first thing we see is a damaged TIE Fighter that Han is trying to bring in for a landing. The next thing we see is Han with a bandaged eye standing before an Imperial Tribunal. He's on trial for disobeying orders. Apparently, he broke formation to try and rescue another ship, which he was apparently successful in doing, though it resulted in things not going well for him. His heroics are not rewarded, however, and he's sent into the infantry. Han at first thinks he'll still be able to fly there, but not so much.

It's a fun little scene, provided by Zcure1 on YouTube, that fills in a piece of the story that is nice to see. It's not strictly necessary as dialogue later in the next scene gives us all the information we need about Han's time in the navy, that he was dumped for, in his words, having a mind of his own, but it's still nice to see the actual events. It also has a fun moment where Han cuts a conversation short that he doesn't want to have any more, similar to the way he does the same thing in Star Wars: A New Hope by blasting the communications terminal.

The scene itself isn't too surprising, as we had already heard previously that such a scene existed. What's interesting, however, is that it appears this scene was actually longer than what we see here. It had previously been reported that two Star Wars extended universe characters, Tag and Bink, were going to appear in Solo: A Star Wars Story and while we never saw them in the final cut, it turns out they were originally part of this scene. However, Jonathan Kasdan, who co-wrote Solo and actually played one of the roles, said the characters were seen as they escorted Solo out of this tribunal, which is a moment we never see here, as the scene cuts directly from the sentence to Han flying through the air.

At this point, a few of the deleted scenes from Solo: A Star Wars Story have been released ahead of the official Digital and Blu-ray release, but there are several more that have promised. You can pick up Solo on Digital tomorrow and Blu-ray September 25.

Jordan Peele Isn't Too Worried About Us Spoilers

Jordan Peele Isn't Too Worried About Us Spoilers

Although not quite as critical as something like The Sixth Sense, Jordan Peeles Get Out is one of those movies that you really didnt want spoiled for you. The writer/directors follow-up Us seems very much cut from a similar cloth, with the early word indicating that there are reveals aplenty in this film. Plus, the marketing campaign is even employing the hashtag #KeepItBetweenUs. That said, Jordan Peele isnt too worried about Us spoilers, as he explained:

People want to keep the secrets. Also, if you spoil something, your friend probably punches you in the shoulder or something. I think we've developed into a culture that respects the idea that spoilers are no fun.

Jordan Peele seems of the belief that spoilers will not be a major problem for Us, not because the film cant be spoiled, but because audiences will do the right thing and keep the films secrets so that other people can enjoy it. Basically, he thinks that people know better and all youd be doing by spoiling the film is making people angry and opening yourself up to some friendly retaliation.

In his comments to Digital Spy, Jordan Peele actually raises quite an interesting point about the culture around spoilers. With the rise of social media, the ability to spoil movies has increased exponentially. B concurrently (and perhaps consequently) a taboo has also risen about spoilers. People now generally agree that spoilers suck. Spoiling a movie for someone else is really poor form and a pretty crappy thing to do, so most people try not to do it.

Jordan Peele also mentioned that this taboo around spoilers makes it fun to have seen a movie and to know its secrets. When you do and refuse to spoil it for someone else, that lends the film an air of mystery that gets other people excited to see it as well, building the buzz and enhancing the experience.

Because of this culture around spoilers, Jordan Peele doesnt see them as being a big issue for his sophomore film. With any luck, hes right. If so and people adhere to common decency and wait for everyone to see Us before discussing it in spoiler-ific detail, especially in a public forum, then there is nothing to worry about and audiences can enjoy the film and have the purest way possible.

By the early reactions out of SXSW, the movie is quite the experience too. Unlike Get Out, Us is true horror movie that will have people watching through their fingers and will give people plenty to discuss when the film ends.

Us is currently enjoying a perfect 100% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes in advance of this weekends opening so the buzz is definitely high here that this is a good movie showing that Get Out was no fluke. The film is tracking at a $40-$45 million opening weekend.

Us opens in theaters on March 22. Stay frosty and beware of spoilers and check out our 2019 Release Schedule for all the other big movies that should be on your radar this year.
