Sorry, Captain Marvel Is Never Heading To Netflix

If you wanted to right now, you could pull up Netflix on your computer, phone or streaming device and watch Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp. The last three MCU titles are all available on the preeminent streaming service, but they'll also be the final three MCU titles to make their way to Netflix. The next MCU movie, Marchs Captain Marvel, is not coming to Netflix, ever.

Thats because Captain Marvel will instead be Disneys first theatrical release and MCU film to come to Disneys new streaming service Disney+. In anticipation of the launch of the streaming service, Disney allowed its licensing deal with Netflix to expire at the end of 2018. That is a financially costly choice, at least in the short term, as Disney chief financial officer Christine McCarthy explained during Disneys first-quarter earnings conference call, saying:

$150 million. That will be weighted to the second half. And to put some context on that, Captain Marvel, which is coming out in this second quarter, is the first film that we will withhold from our output deals. So that's where you can see the foregone licensing revenue begin.

What Christine McCarthy is saying here is that Disney will eat $150 million in lost operating income in the 2019 fiscal year, most of it coming in the second half. This is the amount Disney is expecting to lose from forgone licensing revenue, the money Disney is missing out on by holding back titles, like Captain Marvel, from after-market sales to companies like Netflix. Furthermore, it's affected by the recent cancellation of Netflix's Marvel series, including Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist.

Disney makes popular and desirable movies that have traditionally provided a revenue stream when those movies are licensed out to third parties like the various streaming services and television networks. By holding back titles, like Captain Marvel, which will be exclusive to the Disney+ streaming service, Disney has effectively cut off that revenue stream.

While the $150 million is no small amount to pass up, Disney is doing so as an investment in its future, as it hopes to make many multiples of that down the line with the Disney+ service. On the conference call, Disney CEO Bob Iger likened it to spending money to build new attractions in Disneys theme parks. You have to spend money to make money.

So Captain Marvel will be the first title held back from other services, but it wont be the last.

The days of going to Netflix for the latest Disney or Marvel movie are now at an end. Captain Marvel will be just one of the many value propositions that Disney will be putting forward to entice consumers to the Disney Plus service when it launches later this year. Those wanting to watch Captain Marvel after its theatrical run but before the service launches, will presumably have to (gasp!) buy a physical copy of the Blu-ray.

Disney will also have a 60 percent ownership stake in Hulu once the Fox purchase goes through, so some Disney titles may still come to, or remain there, but Disney Plus will be the primary home for Disney movies in the future as the Mouse House wants that direct-to-consumer platform to be a major part of its business going forward.

We still dont know much about Disney+, like its launch date, but we should gain more clarity when Disney holds an Investor Day presentation and demonstration of the app on April 11.

We dont have to wait quite that long though to see Captain Marvel. The MCUs latest film arrives on March 8. Check out our release guide for all of the biggest movies coming to theaters this year and stay tuned to CinemaBlend for all the latest on the MCU and the Disney+ streaming service.

Since Disney is starting its own streaming service, Marvel films are slowly being taken off Netflix and in the case of Captain Marvel, and any Marvel movie that is released after that, will not be

Captain Marvel is the latest Marvel Studios movie, but it has one major thing different about it: it won't be available to stream on Netflix. If you want to see it, you'll have to stream it elsewhere.

Because of this I fear what Captain Marvel could mean for the MCU. But then, the MCU has so far squared power levels pretty reasonably so that everyone's contributions seem to matter. For example Thor is pretty top tier, but most any avenger could probably assassinate him with th element of surprise.

What's Happening With Edge Of Tomorrow 2, According To Doug Liman

What's Happening With Edge Of Tomorrow 2, According To Doug Liman

With the trend of nostalgia proving endlessly popular and profitable, there is no franchise that seems truly dead. This is especially exciting for the fans, who have hope for their favorite film's future. One major sequel that's currently in development is the follow up to Doug Liman's sci-fi epic Edge of Tomorrow, which hit theaters in 2014. The sequel is currently being titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat, with both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt set to reprise their roles in the upcoming blockbuster. I got to catch up with Liman at San Diego Comic-Con, where he revealed what's happening with Edge of Tomorrow's highly anticipated sequel. He said,

We're working on the script. We have a story I really love.

Well, this is exciting. While it's currently unclear when Live Die Repeat and Repeat will finally arrive in theaters, it seems that the upcoming film's script is getting close to done. So strap on your exoskeleton armor and get ready for another epic sci-fi adventure through space and time.

Doug Liman's comments are sure to excite the many moviegoers who saw and loved Edge of Tomorrow when it arrived in theaters a few years ago. The director/producer crafted a thrilling psychological journey, while also giving Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt plenty of time to kick ass and take names. And considering the first film's complex ending, there's plenty of narrative strings to pull at.

Edge of Tomorrow is set in the not-too-distant future, when alien creatures known as Mimics have invaded planet Earth. Tom Cruise's Major William Cage goes through a sci-fi version of Groundhog Day, where he continually dies, and resets the same morning. Eventually the hero uses this to his advantage, and trains in order to save the planet from invasion.

In the end, Edge of Tomorrow reset once again, presumably giving its heroes another shot at happiness. It's a controversial and somewhat confusing finale, which is why the fandom would love to return to Doug Liman's fantastic world with Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt have also continued to work and gain fans in the years since the film hit theaters, and their shared interest in reprising their roles has kept excitement up.

You can check out my full conversation with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, who was at Comic-Con promoting his new Youtube series Impulse.

Although it's currently unclear when Live Die Repeat and Repeat will arrive in theaters, Doug Liman has been keeping busy with Youtube Red's Impulse, which debuted earlier this summer, and was already renewed for a second season. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Apparently, Spider-Man Tried To Use The Vulture In A Much Earlier Movie

Apparently, Spider-Man Tried To Use The Vulture In A Much Earlier Movie

Thomas Haden Church notoriously played The Sandman in Sam Raimi's third (and final) Spider-Man movie, the cleverly titled Spider-Man 3. Fans refer to it as "the one when everything flew off the rails and went to pieces," primarily because Raimi bowed to studio pressure to include Venom, a villain he had no interest in exploring. Instead, Church says that The Vulture was supposed to be around for his movie, then carry a fourth movie down the line. The actor says:

When they first pitched me the movie, Sandman and, of course, (James) Franco's transformation to the Goblin, we were who he (Spider-Man) had to deal with in the picture and Venom wasn't even in it. They introduced at the very beginning the character of Vulture, but he was only in it briefly, and then at the very end of that picture they were gonna bring The Vulture back just to sorta set the stage that he was probably going to be the main villain in Spider-Man 4. But then, obviously all of that stuff sort of derailed. Well, not so much derailed, but took a different railway.

Last year, Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming marked a number of firsts for the famous web-slinger. It was the first time Spider-Man was able to play in the same sandbox as his Marvel counterparts, thanks to a rights sharing deal between Sony and Marvel Studios. It also was the first time that Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton), aka The Vulture, was used on screen in a Spider-Man movie. But Church's comments confirm what we had been hearing, which is that The Vulture was going to be on deck in an earlier form, setting the stage for Spider-Man 4.

We had heard those rumblings before, as concept art that leaked a while back showed possible sketches of both The Vulture and also Mysterio, another villain who has yet to see the light of day in a Spider-Man movie. This seems ballsy of Sam Raimi to be sketching out the next TWO Spider-Man movies, though seeing as how he was coming off of the wild success of Spider-Man 2, I guess I can see why he had confidence in his saga. Spider-Man 3 shows how quickly a franchise can fall apart, thanks to some questionable decisions.

Instead of teasing The Vulture in Spider-Man 3, as Thomas Haden Church tells JoBlo, we got the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming, a movie that properly established Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in the MCU. The hero will return this summer in Avengers: Infinity War, as well as Avengers 4.
