The Clues In Avengers: Infinity War That Point To Thanos Defeat In Avengers 4

Earlier this summer, Thanos (Josh Brolin) laid to waste half of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the snap of his fingers -- one that was wearing an Infinity Gauntlet, mind you -- and ended Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War on an unprecedented, downbeat ending. The villain prevailed. That never happens. We assume that Thanos' victory over the Avengers will be temporary -- likely resolved in Avengers 4 (which still doesn't have an official title). But HOW can the Mad Titan be bested? Let's venture down the rabbit hole and investigate a few clues that we picked up from the commentary track for Avengers: Infinity War.

For starters, the theory that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) witnessed the one path to victory was confirmed by co-writer Christopher Markus, who was discussing Stephen Strange's powers in the MCU and elaborated:

He generally comes off as the adult in the room. Very reassuring. And that, regardless of what happens over the course of the movie, I think Strange might know how this is going to work out. I have faith in him.

So, too, do we now. We always assumed that Doctor Strange turning over the Time Stone to Thanos in an effort to save Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) meant that Iron Man was essential to the one route to victory that the remaining heroes might have. This means that yes, there IS a chance at a win. There is a possible way for the Avengers to prevail over Thanos. But while the Titan has the Infinity Gauntlet, he might be unstoppable.

Except, the Gauntlet is probably damaged after the snap.

When you fast-forward to that moment in the film, Joe Russo comments on the sizzled weapon that's on Thanos' mitt, and states:

See there, with the Gauntlet and his arm... the power that it takes to use all six stones is significant, and it clearly damaged the Gauntlet. And damaged Thanos permanently.

That got me thinking. Is there another being in the MCU strong enough to wield a Gauntlet that has all six Infinity Stones? Hulk, maybe, but he's intimidated by Thanos at the moment. Thor, potentially. But really, I think the comment by Joe Russo was a set up to the introduction of a hero who we KNOW is going to be the mightiest power that the MCU has ever seen: Captain Marvel.

Things don't happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by accident. There's a reason that Captain Marvel's origin movie arrives between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. We will meet Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), be introduced to her powers and her skill set, and likely deliver on the tease in the end credits of Infinity War, when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) called Carol on a strange device. Assuming Carol is in Avengers 4, she seems like the hero who is powerful enough to wield a Gauntlet and stop Thanos' reign.

And where is there another, undamaged Gauntlet? Well, we saw one on Nidavellir when Thor, Rocket and Groot arrived to speak with Eitri (Peter Dinklage). Again, that was no accident.

My best guess? These clues dropped into the commentary track of Avengers: Infinity War set up a means for the Avengers to get their revenge on Thanos. They have a second Gauntlet waiting for them on Nidavellir. And they're about to meet a superhero powerful enough to wield such a weapon. It will require the remaining heroes to retrieve the Stones. And it might lead to a reunion in the place where I "think" the dusted Avengers are waiting: Inside the Soul Stone.

After he uses the Gauntlet, Thanos immediately arrives into a scene with young Gamora. On the commentary track for this scene. Joe Russo explains that this is Soul World, confirming:

Thanos is transported, through the power that was needed to wipe out half of the life in the universe, into this dream state inside the Soul Stone. He was allowed one last meeting with that which he gave up to get there. The spiritual representation of his daughter.

There's a theme throughout Infinity War (available now on Blu-ray) that's important to note. "We don't trade lives." Captain America (Chris Evans) swears by it. Vision (Paul Bettany) playfully tosses it back at Cap. And yet, after the snap, every member of the MCU that's left has traded a life that is invaluable to them. Cap loses Bucky. Okoye loses T'Challa. Rocket loses Groot. And in the most painful, Tony Stark loses Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Are they all waiting in the Soul Stone? Will the surviving members sacrifice themselves to bring these heroes back?

Avengers 4 really can't get here quick enough.

Aside from reason #1 above, this is the most common reason I encounter that will cause the probate process to take so long. Unfortunately, all of the reasons listed above will be beyond the control of the probate attorney and personal representative and in these situations very little if anything can be done to speed things along.

Why Avengers: Infinity War Wont Show Thanos' Backstory, According To The Russos

Why Avengers: Infinity War Wont Show Thanos' Backstory, According To The Russos

Thanos has been standing on the sidelines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, but no more. Following the failure of his subordinates and partners, the Mad Titan is finally overseeing the collection of the Infinity Stones himself, and it all comes to a head later this month in Avengers: Infinity War. Besides being one of Marvel Comics' most powerful characters, Thanos also has an interesting backstory on the printed page, but Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo opted not to show his movie's counterpart's past since it wasn't important to the overall story. As Joe Russo put it:

We were considering showing [Thanos'] backstory, but ultimately felt it wasn't necessary for the movie.

Just so it's clear, Avengers: Infinity War did crafts backstory for the MCU's Thanos. Part of the movie's action takes place on the villain's homeworld, Titan, and in this continuity, the planet is no longer inhabited due to events that Thanos was unable to prevent. Not wanting to see another type of extinction ever happen, Thanos believes that life in the universe is expanding outward unchecked, so he intends to use the Infinity Stones to change reality as he sees fit. However, as the Russos told Total Film Magazine, none of this will be outright shown during Infinity War. Thanos certainly won't be lacking for screen time, as the directing duo reaffirmed that the movie is being "told from his point of view"; we just won't see his origin story depicted. That said, with Josh Brolin reprising the purple-skinned alien warlord in Avengers 4 next year, perhaps that's where his past will be directly explored.

It's also worth noting that just because we won't see Thanos' backstory in Avengers: Infinity War doesn't mean the movie won't have any flashbacks. Those who watched Guardians of the Galaxy know that Thanos took Gamora as a child and raised her to be one of his many murderous "children," and in the most recent Infinity War trailer, we saw Thanos leading the young Gamora away while the Mad Titan's soldiers surrounded her people. But like the rest of Infinity War's players, the majority of Thanos' scenes will take place in the present, as he and the Black Order will battle the MCU's heroes for control of the Infinity Stones. It's already been shown that the main antagonist will insert the Space and Power Stones into his Infinity Gauntlet, but the fate of the other four Stones is still shrouded in mystery.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27, and it's projected to open at approximately $200 million. Keep checking in with CinemaBlend for more news about Infinity War in these remaining weeks, and to keep up to date about what else the MCU has in development, browse through our Marvel movies guide.

Even though Thanos is the driving force behind Avengers: Infinity War, the Russos decided not to show his backstory for a particular reason.

Why Infinity War Had to Cut Thanos' Backstory

Comic book writer Jim Starlin was welcomed on the set of Avengers: Infinity War many times. Starlin hoped this footage would be released in some sort of director's cut, although that currently seems unlikely.

Avengers: Endgame Proved We Should Stop Worrying About Toy Spoilers

Avengers: Endgame Proved We Should Stop Worrying About Toy Spoilers

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame. Look away if you haven't seen Marvel's latest

After a long year of waiting, Avengers: Endgame is finally in theaters. The Russo Brothers' (last?) MCU blockbuster held no punches, wrapping up a narrative that has spanned 22 movies and over a decade of filmmaking. Endgame is breaking all types of box office records, and really delivering for the hardcore fans who have spent countless hours and dollars to follow along with every new Marvel release.

Ahead of Endgame's release, the public was largely kept in the dark regarding the film's mysterious contents. The Russo Brothers urged the fans to keep the film's secrets and see Endgame on opening weekend to get the full theatrical experience. The film's marketing primarily used footage from the film's first 15 minutes, but potential spoilers came in the form of merchandise.

Toys have become a common source of spoilers over that past few years, arriving in shelves prior to major movies' releases. As such, fans have looked to merchandise like Lego sets to learn upcoming film's contents. Endgame's lego sets were no exception, but after Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters, it became clear that that fans had been (literally) sold a false bill of goods.

Just look at this Lego set as proof. Following Hulkbuster's reappearance in Avengers: Infinity War, fans were delighted to see that War Machine would be getting his own massive robot in Endgame. The War Machine Buster lego set teased that Rhodey's armor would be getting a serious upgrade, and that he'd working alongside Paul Rudd's Ant-Man in the process.

Of course, none of these things happened. War Machine never got his own Hulkbuster armor, and he wasn't paired with Ant-Man on Endgame's big time heist. So while the Lego sets might be cool, they're ultimately not based off of anything from the film. Bummer.

One of the biggest Lego sets that ties into Avengers: Endgame is the Ultimate Quinjet. The set teases a big group of Avengers getting into their matching Quantum Suits, and jet setting on a mission to battle Thanos. The play set features the likes of Hawkeye, Rocket, Black Widow, and Thor, and shows them battling some Chitauri.

Of course, this is another scene that simply is never in Avengers: Endgame. The survivors never actually go anywhere with their Quantum Suits, instead using them within the Avengers Compound to travel through time and space. What's more, the Quinjet barely makes an appearance in the blockbuster, save for a few brief scenes.

In the end, only one set from Lego's Avengers: Endgame merchandise actually ended up coming to fruition in the film. That is the biggest and most expensive set, which depicts the Avengers Compound Battle. It shows Thanos and his forces attacking the good guys' hideout, with characters like Hulk, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, and Nebula fighting off the Mad Titan.

And this scene did in fact happen, albeit differently than depicted in the Lego version. The Avengers Compound was all but leveled when Thanos came knocking, and it seemed like he could take another victory. Ultimately the biggest Marvel battle occurred and the good guys won, but the compound and a few characters fell in the process.

What's clear from Avengers: Endgame's Lego sets is that Marvel Studios is cognizant of toys being potential spoilers. While still able to make money on merchandise, the studio is keeping its secrets at all costs. As such, we should probably stop worrying so much about potential toy-related spoilers, at least as far as the MCU is concerned. The Lego sets for Spider-Man: Far From Home have already hit shelves, but smart money says that they've also got some red herrings regarding the upcoming blockbuster's plot.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now, and noticeably missing the events shown in the film's merchandise. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Did You Spot The MCU Labels In The New Dark Phoenix Trailer? Here's What They Could Mean

Did You Spot The MCU Labels In The New Dark Phoenix Trailer? Here's What They Could Mean

Last night, the second trailer for Dark Phoenix dropped, and there was a lot to take in. One of the previews biggest moments was at the end, when several of the main characters were imprisoned and de-powered aboard a train that Jean Grey lifts into the air with ease. But before the train is ripped off its tracks, if you look closely, youll see the armed guards wearing shoulder patches that say MCU, a term quite familiar to comic book movie fans.

This goes without saying, but obviously MCU does not stand for Marvel Cinematic Universe in Dark Phoenix, the seventh of the main X-Men installments. That being said, given how widely that acronym is used, one would imagine its inclusion isnt a coincidence. Director Simon Kinberg and his creative team had to have thrown that in as a subtle gag as their superhero franchise competitors not that this rivalry is going to last much longer since the X-Men and the Fantastic Four properties will soon be brought to Disney and are expected, but not confirmed yet, to be absorbed into the actual MCU.

As for what MCU does stand for in the X-Men universe, my guess its Mutant Containment Unit, or something along those lines, since Professor X, Magneto and others are being held captive. Deadpool 2 featured a similar group called the Department of Mutant Containment, which handled security at the Icebox prison. Maybe the MCU is affiliated with the DMC, or maybe this is a separate group altogether thats substituting for the DMC. These timelines are so confusing. In any case, these MCU operatives have apprehended some of Dark Phoenixs main characters (I wonder if theyre working for William Stryker), and I dont think theyre going to let the mutants watch Iron Man.

Set in 1992, nearly a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix is taking a new stab at adapting the classic Dark Phoenix Saga, which was previously tackled in the derided X-Men: The Last Stand. This time around, Jean Grey loses control of her Phoenix abilities after being hit by a solar flare while she and the other X-Men are on a rescue mission in space. With the Phoenix entity unleashed, the corrupted Jeans reign of terror will result in mass destruction and numerous casualties, one of which has already been spoiled. As if Jeans actions creating a schism between the X-Men and their allies on how to neutralize her, these characters will also have to deal with a mysterious and powerful alien shapeshifter manipulating Jean for her own purposes.

Dark Phoenix opens in theaters on June 7, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more updates. For now, look through our 2019 release schedule to find out what other movies are coming out this year.
