Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald Will Feature A Human Nagini

When Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2 arrived in theaters in 2011, fans of J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World assumed that was the end of the story. But the acclaimed writer has been expanding her universe, through both a Broadway play and a spinoff franchise, Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them. The latter made a ton of movie with its first installment, and its highly anticipated sequel is set to arrive in just two months, with The Crimes of Grindelwald including even more connections to the Harry Potter books. In addition to Jude Law's young Dumebledore, the final trailer revealed Voldemort's snake/horocrux Nagini would actually be in the film-- and as a human. Actress Claudia Kim has been keeping her role under wraps for quite some time, and finally spoke about what to expect from the human Nagini in Fantastic Beasts 2. As she tells it,

It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini. You've only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she's a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that's a wonderful contrast to the character.

Now this is fascinating. Rather than an all-out evil character, it appears that Nagini's transformation into a murderous snake wasn't exactly her choice. While traveling in the Circus Arcanus, she simply entertains muggles and attempts to keep her humanity. But anyone who has seen the Harry Potter films knows that Nagini's fate is decided.

Claudia Kim's comments to EW add another reason for Potterheads to be psyched about the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel. While the first movie largely functioned independently from the events of the Harry Potter franchise, the connections are forming in Crimes of Grindelwald. Many of them are shown off in the final trailer, including Hogwarts, the Mirror of Erised, and even Nicolas Flamel. No one expected Nagini's origin story, which Claudia Kim made clear is very tragic.

She does feel sometimes it's not controllable. She is bound to [permanently] transform at some point to a beast so she feels this pressure that the clock is ticking.

Poor Nagini. Years before she began murdering beloved characters (SNAPE!), Nagini was a young witch with a blood curse on her. It should be fascinating to see how she eventually becomes a horocrux for Voldemort. Maybe he and Grindelwald told her they'd cure her? Or maybe something traumatic happens that inspired Nagini into a life of evildoing and shedding her skin. She seems to be friends with Ezra Miller's Credence, with the two both containing a power they can't control.

All will be revealed when Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald arrives in theaters on November 16th, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Skyscraper Is The Only Big Budget Non-Sequel This Month

Skyscraper Is The Only Big Budget Non-Sequel This Month

This summer, Dwayne Johnson is back in another one of his big-budget action movies. Skyscraper has one of the biggest movie stars in the world in a Die Hard-esque adventure where he has to stop a group of criminals while trapped inside the most advanced building in the world. The movie is arriving in a month where every other major release is either a sequel or somehow tied to a franchise, but that just might be one of Skyscraper's greatest strengths, according to producer Beau Flynn.

There are 10 sequels on the left and right of us in our release window, which is really sobering in a way. It's so important to us to make original movies and try to create something different. And a huge part of why we get to do that is Dwayne Johnson.

There are definitely a lot of sequels coming out in July. Among the major releases this month are films like Ant-Man and the Wasp, The First Purge, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, The Equalizer 2, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. That's a lot of sequels, with Skyscraper as the only big-budget original movie that can compete with them. However, part of the reason for that is Dwayne Johnson. He's a really bankable star, and his presence in the movie is why it can have such a large budget. In this way, Johnson is helping to promote original films and help them compete in ways that they ordinarily couldn't.

However, it should be noted that while July is packed with sequels, August actually has a lot of original or non-sequel movies hitting theaters. Films like The Meg, Mile 22, The Spy Who Dumped Me, BlacKkKlansman, and Crazy Rich Asians are all in August, which is actually a little refreshing.

Additionally, in the case of Skyscraper, part of the appeal was that it was an original movie with a throwback action movie feel that didn't cost a tremendous amount (relatively speaking) to make. The budget for the movie was actually $125 million, which is still a lot of money, but it's low compared to some of the other blockbuster films out there. Dwayne Johnson further detailed this while talking to the Los Angeles Times.

Well, the original scripts that are coming in are certainly not coming in at this size and scale. Of course, in today's market there are superhero movies and sequels and big franchises, which work very well and they're very entertaining, and it's what we do. But with Skyscraper, the original IP [intellectual property] made it very appealing. I think there was also something interesting to the studios in that we were going to be cost-conscious and create a summer movie that didn't have to be $250 million. You could cut that in half and it would still feel like a big, entertaining movie.

If anyone can pull off a movie like Skyscraper, it's The Rock. The film looks super fun, and I'm sure that people will be filling the theater to check it all out. If Johnson can create a franchise out of fighting an earthquake, he can do anything.

Skyscraper arrives in theaters next weekend on July 13. For more movie news, keep it right here at CinemaBlend.

The Important Role Laurence Fishburnes Bill Foster Has In Ant-Man And The Wasp

The Important Role Laurence Fishburnes Bill Foster Has In Ant-Man And The Wasp

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on a roll with Phase Three, and Avengers: Infinity War seemingly changed the entire shared universe as we know it. While the fans are still reeling from the devastating results of The Russo Brothers' blockbuster, there's a new MCU installment coming in a matter of weeks. Ant-Man and The Wasp will bring Paul Rudd's Scott Lang back into the narrative, while also allowing Evangeline Lilly's Hope to become a bonafide superhero herself. There's also a few newcomers in the sequel, including Laurence Fishburne's Bill Foster. Foster's been teased as Hank Pym's former colleague, but it looks like their relationship might actually be strained. CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg visited the Ant-Man an the Wasp set in Atlanta, where director Peyton Reed explained the complicated dynamic between Hank and Bill.

Bill's a former colleague, you know, who really was involved early on with Pym in a thing called Project Goliath. Their lives have taken these kind of divergent paths, and when we find Bill Foster in this movie, he is teaching quantum physics at Berkeley. I also liked the idea of grounding -- because the movie takes place in San Francisco and it's not just for stunts and scenery. Like, Berkeley, that's an important thing in the movie. Is that one guy has gone this, you know, they were both involved with S.H.I.E.L.D at some point, but one guy's sort of stepped away and taken a more academic approach. I liked the idea from the beginning, especially having Michael and Laurence Fishburne, [as] these guys who are sort of scientific rivals. That's really the rivalry. We always talked about sort of a Steve Jobs/Bill Gates kind of thing. Two scientists who are both geniuses in quantum physics and quantum mechanics. But maybe have a Mac/PC rivalry about what the approach to delving into the quantum realm might be. I also like the idea of with those two actors, especially with Fishburne, like, someone who's gonna actually go toe-to-toe with Michael in terms of who's the smart, who's the smartest guy in the room? That struck me as something really fun, to give Hank Pym a foil in this movie in that way.

While Bill Foster and Hank Pym are both geniuses in their own wright, it appears that they might not have the same opinion about their shared work. Hank has risked life, limb, and family in order to continue his work with subatomic physics and size-shifting technology. Meanwhile, Bill Foster has managed to settle down and live a life under the radar.

Peyton Reed's comments are sure to excite the many MCU fans who appreciated Michael Douglas' Hank Pym in Ant-Man. Overall, it seems that supporting character will have even more to do in the upcoming sequel. Aside from their daring operations and the development of Hope's high tech weaponry, Hank will presumably be dealing with a myriad of personal issues. One of these will come from Laurence Fishburne's Bill Foster, and their shared past with S.H.I.E.L.D..

The arrival of Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet van Dyne will also presumably give Hank Pym time to shine. He'll have to reflect on their failed mission, which resulted in Janet being lost in the Quantum Realm for decades. With all this Hank-focused storyline, I'm starting to worry that tragedy might strike Michael Douglas' MCU character before the runtime ends. But that's all theorizing at this point, as we know very little about Ant-Man and the Wasp.

All that will change when Ant-Man and The Wasp arrives in theaters on July 6th. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
